Veterans Day History
Armistice Day originated on November 11, 1919, on the first
anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1926, congress made the holiday an
annual observance. President Eisenhower officially changed the name of the
holiday from Armistice Day to Veterans Day in 1954. The holiday was moved to
celebrate Veterans Day on the fourth Monday in October in the year 1968, but in
1975, President Ford returned the holiday to November 11th. Other countries, like Britain, France, and Canada commemorate veterans around the same time of year that America does. In other countries, it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11:00 a.m. on November 11th.
